My Local Solution

Although oil spills are a worldwide problem, there are certain ways to help clean up and donate locally. Instead of physically going to clean up an oil spill, foundations recommend helping in other ways. My local solution will be to work with the Matter of Trust organization, local hair salons/groomers, as well as my school to donate materials used to clean up oil spills. The Matter of Trust organization collects the hair that salons would normally throw away, as well as stockings a tights to make the booms that would potentially solve an oil spill. The foundation stuffs stockings with hair to make long booms that easily absorb oil from water. Our hair naturally collects oil, which is why we shampoo, making it a natural, cheap way to save our ecosystem. I will go to local hair salons, barbers, and dog groomers to ask if they would be willing to donate the extra hair from haircuts to the Matter of Trust organization. After about a week I will go back to these salons and collect the hair that they have been gathering and will give them a brochure of information to keep donating on their own. As well as hair, I will reach out to the students and faculty of school to donate unused stockings and tights throughout the week and a half. In the end, I will send however many boxes I can to the Matter of Trust organization in San Fransisco to contribute Hightstown's help towards oil spills. Especially with the recent spill in the Gulf, our help is needed, and I am willing to give in any way that I can.
